Sound quality is not the first thing to check

The quality badge draws the eye, but what actually decides satisfaction is whether the music you listen to is there. Regional music, older albums and exclusive releases vary by service. The first thing to do in a trial is import your usual playlists and count the missing tracks. Whether you mainly listen to local or international music can tip the balance, and small-looking differences such as lyrics display or release timing can change daily convenience a lot.

Plan structure matters more than you think

Comparing individual plans alone misjudges real spending. Family or shared plans cut the per-person cost sharply, and student discounts or carrier bundles may apply. Family plans usually require the same address, though, so check the conditions. Some plans are bundled with video services, so checking for overlap with subscriptions you already pay for can cut duplicate charges. Prices and terms change frequently, so recheck the official details right before signing up.

Lossless is not always audible

Lossless files reconstruct the original, so in theory they beat lossy compression. Wireless earphones, however, usually re-compress during transmission, narrowing the gap, and on the move or in noisy places it is even harder to hear. It is worthwhile if you spend long periods listening wired in a quiet room; otherwise it can drop down your priorities. Even where lossless is offered, whether it costs extra and whether it is on by default varies, so take a look at the settings screen.

Data and storage

High-quality settings multiply data usage. Setting a lower quality for mobile use automatically makes it easier to stay within your plan. Downloading albums you play often saves data and prevents dropouts where the signal is weak.

  • High quality at home, standard on the move
  • Download what you play often
  • Downloads take up a fair amount of storage

Does it work on your devices

On a phone, any service works much the same, but support splits between services once you move to cars, smart speakers, smartwatches, game consoles and TVs. If you listen while driving, smooth car integration matters more than sound quality; if you use speakers at home, voice control may be the deciding factor. The surest test is to connect every device you actually use at least once during the trial.

Recommendations and discovery

Over time, a service's recommendations shape satisfaction a lot. Whether it keeps replaying the same songs or is good at surfacing new music differs between services. Recommendations are built from listening history, so sharing one account with family blurs them. On a family plan, give everyone their own account, and check whether sleep sounds or children's music can be kept out of your recommendations.

What to check during the trial

Free trials usually bill automatically on the last day. If you are not sure you will continue, note the cancellation date on the day you start. Also check whether playlists can be exported if you switch services later — it makes moving much easier.

  • Import your usual playlists and count missing tracks
  • Connect the devices you actually use, such as car and speakers
  • Test mobile quality settings and downloads
  • Check how to cancel and the billing date, and put it in your calendar

The order to decide in

In short: first check the music you listen to is there, then work out the real cost with the people you will share with and any discounts, then confirm it works on your devices, and only then compare sound quality and recommendations. You do not have to stay with one service forever, so comparing again when prices or catalogues change is reasonable. Just remember that switching means building up your recommendation history from scratch.
